Heirloom Seeds

I got my tomato seeds started a week or two ago. I ordered my heirloom seeds from Baker Creek. There was a quote on the seed package that I thought I would share.

"The federal government has sponsored research that has produced a tomato that is perfect in every respect, except that you can't eat it. We should make every effort to make sure this disease, often referred to as 'progress', doesn't spread.
-Andy Rooney

To insure your family's health and survival. Please order, plant and grow heirloom seed!

I am new to your site and enjoying it very much. I have been a prepper for about 2 years. I currently reside in South FL and I am trying to figure out what will grow the best in a garden in the climate here. I am a condo dweller, yes I know, but it is paid for!

Thanks for any guidance,

Brad in FL

Hi Brad and welcome. You are lucky to live in South Florida and have the opportunity to grow many types of vegetables all year long. Do you have any yard space or will you need to grow in containers on a balcony? There are many places also sitting up community garden plots.

Thank you for your response, I will have to be growing on a balcony in containers at this point. I am interested in learning how to grow now, before I have to!

My daughter lives in a townhouse in FL and they dont allow anything past the patio slab. Though its a big one and she could have a container graden. I had a balcony garden twice and they are fun to grow. How many sq. ft. do you have available and does sun come directly at it or from side to side?

I also do seed swaps on my plantcycle group if you want to meet other gardeners in Florida. Some are starting community gardens where you can participate that way also. I grew green beans in a coffee can in an attic apartment once with only a skylight and a tilt open window I had blue lake beans growing in my kitchen! It was fun. We got one meal for two people out of it but it was still worth trying. I used two small standard coffee cans with two plants a piece and they quickly wanted to outgrow the "pots". If you used the larger coffee cans or even a box lined with a trash bag you could do pole beans. They grow taller and you get way more beans. Some also grow strawberries on a wood tower with casters so it can be moved or rotated. They are pretty neat.
